Hachijojima has been a kingdom for gardening with a long history since the Edo period.
The Phoenix roebelenii, which represents Hachijojima island and boasts a market share of over 90%, has a history of 100 years of production and is the world's largest production area.
The island's mild climate and soil are ideal for the cultivation of a wide variety of ornamental plants, including the Phoenix roebelenii. A wide variety of ornamental plants are grown on the island, taking advantage of the warm climate and soil.

The island gardeners have been searching for unknown plants in distant countries since before the war, and have fostered the current gardening culture through many years of trial and error.
